Dig-In: Food for Our Neighbors & Our Table

5/20/2026

This video is awesome if you haven't watched it!
It tells about the many different ways to volunteer with Dig-In. After the harvest and other work is done, anyone can pick up free produce on Wednesdays. Not only is this a win for your table and grocery budget, but it's also an opportunity for outreach, evangelism, and to help put food on your neighbor's table. When you pick up a box for your family, grab one, two, or maybe more for your friends and neighbors as well. Taking them food is a way of sharing God's love and an opportunity to share your story of how the Lord has blessed you.

Camp Funshine Volunteer Opportunities

Funshine Day Camp, June 22-25 2026.  Celebrating 26 years of camping fun!
What is Summer Funshine Day Camp?  It is designed to provide recreational and educational opportunities for persons of all ages with developmental disabilities. Our hope is that participants quality of life will be enhanced through fellowship where everyone is loved, affirmed and valued.
The need for folks to be INCLUDED rather than EXCLUDED prompted people to join in prayer for a solution to this problem being experienced by people in our area.  Through God’s guidance and grace, “Funshine” has served increasing numbers of campers with disabilities over the years at no cost to participants.  The good Lord has abundantly supplied their needs.
The past 24 years, Camp Funshine was held at Patience Park Campground in South Toe.
Due to Hurricane Helene and the destruction, the campground was lost.  The volunteers and families of Camp Funshine prayed for a new permanent location.  Their prayers were heard.
Camp Funshine will be held at the West Yancey Volunteer Fire Department Training Center, 6553 US Hwy 19, Burnsville.  We encourage anyone that would like to see what “Funshine” is all about to join us as a volunteer.  Volunteer applications may be picked up in the Family Life Center or in the church office.  If you would like to volunteer, please return applications to the church office by June 5th.  If you have any questions, you may contact Jeanne Proffitt @ 828-284-5366 or [email protected]
To learn more about Funshine, visit our website at www.summerfunshine.org or our Facebook Page at Funshine Summer Day Camp of WNC.

Home Project Help

That hole needs patching in your Sheetrock.
That hill needs weed eating.
Those walls could use a fresh coat of paint.
Can’t clean those cobwebs in your house anymore.

Let us know so we can help!

Many of us find ourselves needing help with home projects and Higgins is offering to help with these needs through “Construction Love” and simply just helping to clean your house or hang a picture.
There will be HOME PROJECT BOXES placed in the Sanctuary and Family Life Center. When you have a need, fill out the card provided with your contact information and a brief description of the project and place it into the box. Someone will reach out to you.
     Heads up
Higgins family!  We’ll be asking for volunteers as needs arise. This will be an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ.
Come fellowship, and share your gifts to bless others.                                                                                                  Many thanks!

It's that time of year again when we have an opportunity to transform a child's life through Compassion sponsorship. David Cort has been our local spokesperson for Compassion for many years. Thanks to his dedication and effort, several families and groups within our congregation are sponsoring children. This year we have added four new sponsors from our church family. You guys are amazing! We give a big shout out of thanks for all who are faithfully sponsoring a child. Know you are making a difference in the life of a child, and the world.

A Night to Shine

Night to Shine is a complimentary event, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, for people with special needs hosted by local churches around the world. The event is open to anyone living with disabilities, ages 14 and older. Activities included a red carpet entrance complete with a warm welcome from a friendly crowd and paparazzi, hair and makeup stations, shoeshines, limousine rides, karaoke, gifts, a catered dinner, a Sensory Room, a Respite Room for parents and caregivers, dancing, and a crowning ceremony where every guest is honored as a King or a Queen - the way God sees them each and every day.

Higgins helped to support a Night to Shine held on February 13, 2026 at Mars Hill University in collaboration with Beech Glen Baptist Church. Look at our friends shine! Everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to all our volunteers who worked at the event and behind the scenes to make this night a success.

From Athlete to Missionary

4/28/2026

We at Higgins have a wonderful opportunity to support a missionary here in the United States that grew up just down the road in Gastonia. He played football with Cole Shehan at Wingate University. Jaheim did not know Christ at that time. After graduation, he transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas. It was there that he met a young man who changed his life. I'll stop at that and let him tell you his story himself in the video linked below.

After completing his time in Texas, Jaheim joined Campus Outreach and moved to the Chicago area where he disciples to students, bringing them to Christ. He then teaches these students how to disciple to other students. As part of Campus Outreach, he is responsible for raising funds to cover his work. The funds go directly to Campus Outreach under Jaheim's name. Due to his background, he does not have the support of a faith family backing him. He remembered his Christian friends from the universities he attended and reached out to them, in hopes of finding faith families to connect with that would help to support him through prayers and financial assistance. After reaching out to Cole, Cole contacted Amy in hopes of his home church of Higgins helping to support Jaheim. Amy was inspired by his story, as I'm sure you will be also. We ask that above all, you will keep Jaheim and his work in your prayers. If you feel called to help him financially there is a link below where you can send support in his name. This can be a one-time or monthly donation.

For those of you who have young people in your life, or know of others that might be inspired by his story, please share this link to his video. One never knows when a simple gesture could change someone's life forever.

Join us for third Sunday Worship at Yancey House

4/27/2026

Okay, so it was the 4th Sunday this month. Remember, however, after this it will be each 3rd Sunday starting in May. We will gather in the dinning hall of Yancey House at 10am to sing familiar old hymns with the residents and to hear words of Biblical encouragement. It was such a blessing to belt out old hymns with old and new friends. No one cared if they could carry a tune or not. We all just had fun worshiping.

    Missions Blog

Here at Higgins, we are actively involved in mission work within the community and around the world. Our three-fold focus is on sharing the gospel, serving to meet the needs of others, and building connections. There are many ways you can get involved. Some opportunities may tug at your heart to get involved by participating in a project. Other times, you may feel you could better serve the mission through your prayers or a donation. All levels of involvement are important and very much needed. Our hope is that we will see you out in the field soon, involved in one or more of the upcoming opportunities.
